The cheese world’s collective eyes were on Madison, Wis., this week, where judging for the 2012 World Championship Cheese Contest wrapped up last night. While the Dutch clinched the overall championship with Vermeer Gouda, many of the 82 categories included American cheeses as winners and runners-up, and we were pleased to see several of our favorites recognized.

So let’s give a round of applause to:

Jasper Hill Farm for Harbison (Best of Class, Open Class Soft Cheeses)

Cellars at Jasper Hill for Landaff (Third Award, Open Class Semi-Soft Cheeses)

Carr Valley for Cocoa Cardona (Third Award, Flavored Semi-Soft Goat’s Milk Cheeses) and Marisa (Best of Class, Surface [Mold] Ripened Sheep’s Milk Cheeses)

Holland’s Family Cheese for Marieke Smoked Gouda (Best of Class, Smoked Hard Cheeses)

I was able to attend the event last night and not only was it interesting, but also delicious! I learned a lot about cheese competitions/judging, and we got to sample oodles of fabulous cheeses from around the world. I’m proud of Wisconsin’s Milk Marketing Board for all they do to bring these competitions to fruition and to give them credibility. Thanks for your post!

Lucky you, Alyssa! One day C and I will have to go, but we got our Madison fix in November.
