The 2nd annual Virginia Cider Week kicks off today, November 15, and continues through the 24th. (Yes, there’s too much drinking involved to contain it to a typical 7-day week.) Events are scheduled all around the Commonwealth, culminating in the Cider Fest at Castle Hill Cider in Kewsick, Va., next Saturday, Nov. 23.
As the self-proclaimed #CiderLovesCheese ambassador, I offered some regional cheese pairings for the Cider Week blog. There are a number of balanced, dry Virginia ciders that I enjoy for cheese pairings, such as the Serious Cider from Foggy Ridge Cider, Farmhouse Dry from Potter’s Craft Cider, and Ragged Mountain from Albemarle CiderWorks. (Also look for the Foggy Ridge Handmade, a crisp cider bottled in a baby champagne bottle that makes it ideal for gifting or serving on special occasions.) Check out the post for pairing ideas to celebrate Cider Week at home — or get out and check out some of the events and cidermakers in person.
For those of us “up North” in the DC area, there will be a cider and cheese tasting at Cowgirl Creamery on Thursday, Nov. 21, 4-6pm, and Righteous Cheese at Union Market will offer a cider flight at the bar all week. Also on Thursday, Nov. 21, Twisted Vines in Arlington hosts Foggy Ridge cidermaker Diane Flynt. Many Northern Virginia Whole Foods locations will also host tastings.
