Happy birthday to us! This month marks our 6th year of sharing our cheese discoveries with you, dear readers. To celebrate, Jill and I gathered our curd kids for a weekend retreat in Minneapolis (thankfully, pre-snow) and, well, ate cheese. Would you expect anything else?

6th anniversary cheese cake | cheeseandchampagne.com

We thought we’d knock off a few missing letters from our ABCs and build a cheese cake while we were at it. Pro-tip: Don’t use an uber-ripe camembert as the base of your cheese tower. But we had to include Alemar Cheese’s Bent River, a nod to our Minnesota half. As you might expect, we selected an array of bubbly-worthy cheeses — after Bent River came St. Stephen (cows milk, Four Fat Fowl, NY), Valentine (sheeps milk, Ancient Heritage Dairy, OR), Martone (cow/goat mixed milk, LaClare Farms, WI), and Smokey Mountain Round (goat milk, Goat Lady Dairy, NC). Cheeses to represent each of our home and present state/regions, and one amazing new triple-cream to tie it all together.

American Cheese Month may be over, but we’re hoping our ABCs of American Artisan Cheese (and this leaning tower of cheeses) inspire you to seek out some new cheeses — and perhaps include them on your holiday table. To make that easier, we’ve got an American Cheese Goodie Bag to give away to one lucky reader! (That’s right, it’s our birthday and we’re giving you gifts. Cheese is made for sharing, after all.)

Happy Birthday Colleen & Jill! So happy for you guys. 6yrs! Wow! Amazing! Wishing you much success and many more years. You guys were an inspiration to me and I’m so glad I discovered your blog. So, cheese shops…well, there’s Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Murray’s in NYC (mail order), then Plum Market in West Bloomfield and Whole Foods. I also like to directly to the cheesemaker whenever possible. So, Beehive Cheese in Utah, Sweet Grass Dairy in Georgia, Beekman 1802 in Sharon Springs, NY…okay, I’m getting a bit carried away. Stay Cheesy!

Thanks House Mouse for the kind words! Sounds like you have your buying strategy all plotted out. Hope to make it to Zingerman’s myself some day — got to go on the WI Cheese Tour with Ari a few years ago, talk about a cheese rock star! :)

I buy cheese from Original Herkimer Cheese in Ilion, NY, from the farmer’s market down the street and whenever I’m in NYC I go to Murray’s!

dccheese December 10, 2014 at 11:59 am

Ah yes, Murray’s is a must when in the city! Love to buy directly from cheesemakers at farmers markets, too.
